Welcome to Calotype!

Welcome to the Perspectives Blog!

My name is Julie Stephens, and this is my blog about portraits and life from the other side of the camera.  Together with my husband, Jonathan (that’s us with our son Jack, left) we operate Calotype Photography. I’m the artist behind the camera, and Jonathan manages portrait sales. Baby Jack is the Calotype Poster Child, modeling in exchange for room and board. Watch out for him— he has an affinity for two-year-old girls in pettiskirts!

Do you absolutely love your family and children? Do you think pudgy baby hands and toes are marvelous? Maybe you cried on your son’s first (and second) day of kindergarten, or maybe you’re the mom that gives your daughter a standing ovation at every dance recital. If you believe your children are the best thing ever, then call us at 417.845.1151 to schedule a Portrait Session. We may not be able to bottle up all that childhood sweetness, but we can capture it on canvas, and you’ll be filled with joy each time you see it!

PS: Browse our blog and leave a comment. We would LOVE to hear from you!

Special thanks to Richardson Studio in Bloomington, IN for our family portrait.

The Calotype Princess: 2 Months Old

January 12th, 2012

Miss Clara Lyndon is already two months old!  (It’s amazing how fast time goes by when you don’t sleep at night).

Don’t let that innocent face fool you.  She can scream and wake the dead.

Breathing in her sweetness… makes this stage worthwhile.

She will not always be this way, and one day I will look back… and be so thankful for these images. We love you, Clarabelle.

Clara and Jack: The Difference at One Month

December 11th, 2011

When we brought Jack home from the NICU, he was a tiny four pounds, ten ounces (up a pound from his birth weight).  He was one month old.

I wanted a similar image of Clara, to show the difference between the two.  Clara weighed eight pounds, 15 ounces at birth and was already ten pounds, 11 ounces by her one-month doctors appointment.

Look at those glorious fat rolls!

I posted more images of our first family portraits on my personal Facebook profile, click through to see them!

It’s A Girl!

November 30th, 2011

Presenting Miss Clara Lyndon– the new addition to the Calotype family.  Born exactly on her due date, she weighed 8 pounds, 15 ounces.  I love her immensely and would love to express my feelings in writing, but I’m so sleep deprived and exhausted I must conserve my energy. (Insert “bedraggled” emoticon here). Everyone is doing well and we are adjusting as well as can be expected.  Our family of four is now back to work at Calotype.  More pictures to follow… eventually…!

We Endure A Haunted Forest for the Sake of Smiling Toddlers

October 29th, 2011

This charming trail in the Ozarks seems lovely enough, doesn’t it?

Hmm.  There were some non-lovely surprises involved in this Portrait Session, like a little green snake darting across the path.  Then a VERY LARGE black snake languidly making its way along, ONLY A FEW FEET in front of me (not cool).  THEN a box turtle, which isolated from the snake encounters would have seemed harmless and cute, opened its mouth and silently roared at me.  I am not joking.  I know a turtle’s silent roar when I see one and it was CREEPY.

THERE’S MORE. My attractive and well-dressed husband, who was kindly assisting with the reflector, was stung/bitten on the thumb by an Unidentified Object, which caused intense pain and brief exclamations, followed by swelling, itching and head scratching (because we had NO idea what bit/stung/attacked/assailed him). Fortunately, the swelling went away a few days later and his hand still seems to be attached, so we are not too worried at this point.  BUT back on the subject…

We went through all of THAT for THIS:

Aden’s beautiful, beautiful smile.  A perfect reward for a (somewhat freaky) nature  hike.

See more by watching the slideshow of the entire Portrait Session.  (There are no black snakes or other wildlife in the photos; only adorable children.  Sorry, nature lovers).

Working on Location… and Improvising!

October 16th, 2011

Sometimes we’re asked to work in client’s homes.  I enjoy this— I like new locations and new lighting circumstances.  I usually prowl around their home and look for the best light, which can be found in the oddest of locations! Garages are almost always a good bet, but in this case, the kitchen table was my choice.

Here’s my sweetie husband, Jon, sticking his face down by the scale so I can test the lighting on his face.  Oh, the things he does for me! (Don’t worry, I pay him well).

Then, using the tablecloth as a background, because I love the color harmony it brings to the scale.

Then… baby Katherine, curled up so sweetly.  Tada!

This is just one of many beautiful images created of Miss Katherine.  See more on Facebook.
